Photo Project - A Spider Dies Whenever It Rains

The actual saying is 'It rains whenever a spider dies,' however I chose to play on this and suggest the endlessness of the passage of time. The mannequin has a large spider grasped into its face, which I intended to suggest that the mannequin is waiting for it to rain so that the spider will die, or it is contemplating killing the spider despite the fact that this will bring out the rain. This instils the notion of a rock and a hard place, and also the endless loop of waiting for something to happen on its own, or taking personal action despite the glaring consequences.

My Demo Reel

Independent Study - 'Soul'

My independent study is a digital painting I've created in Paint tool SAI. Having had downloaded a new square brush with the whispy effect I desired, I found it ideal as a medium with which to paint. I've titled this piece 'Soul', as the emotion I am trying to convey is mainly spiritual and representational of human development. This painting is largely surreal though the figure is clearly anthropomorphic. My goal was to present the figure as being as flame like as possible, so as to stand out against the dark background as much as possible. A flame is often used as symbolism as one's passage of life, as a flame is begins small, burns more brightly, and eventually can be snuffed out. This fragility and uncertainty was what I hoped to get across in the positioning and posture of the figure, though I feel I could have pushed this further. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of this work and the abstract flecks of light present throughout the piece, giving it the appearance of texture.

Visual Identity - Pilot Light Studios

My company, Pilot Light Studios, is meant to perpetuate an air of sleek versatility. We at Pilot Light Studios specialize in illustration design, and sequential arts. As green is a colour with the most personal representation and meaning, I chose to use this colour the most prominently throughout the design of the logo and poster. The logo is comprised of the images of a lighter and a pair of goggles, the lighter for a pilot light and the goggles of those a pilot would wear. The additional marketing pieces I selected were a book mark and a USB key. I considered that each of these items are inherently useful, and therefore would be less likely to be misplaced or thrown away. Each allows prolonged use, meaning the company logo would stay with the user in both functionality and in mind.

Black and White (Plus one) Photography

As a social commentary on today's tendencies to put aesthetic and fashion ahead of complex thought, I intend to utilize the one of our headless mannequins, (the black and white) and a single piece of clothing, likely a hat, which will act as the plus one. The mannequin is a metaphor for the societal cookie cutter mold many seek to fit into, which is in itself, lacking substance and therefore 'black and white'. The single piece of clothing is acting as the plus one for the headless model in place of another certain facial feature. The hat is a hopeful replacement for  the lack of creative and free thought and the emotional gap many hope to fill with materialistic ideals, though this doesn't change the fact that the mannequin is indeed, still lacking a head.
